Following a brutal attack by two other dogs, Greenville County Animal Care issued an urgent plea for a volunteer to transport the injured dog to a veterinary facility. Legend’s life was saved when two women, out on a walk, overheard a commotion coming from a nearby residence. They rushed to investigate and discovered two Pit Bulls attacking the helpless dog. After notifying animal control, the three canines were taken to Greenville County Animal Care.
When Alexay first encountered Legend, he was covered in blood and inflicted with numerous bite wounds. His body was marked with biting scars, his left ear had been torn off, and his right ear hung by a thread. “You could see all the puncture scars from his shoulders forward,” Rizzo, one of the rescuers, recounted. “When he moved, blood flowed from a couple of serious wounds.”
The emergency room veterinarian expressed uncertainty about Legend’s chances of survival. Although there were no apparent fractures, the accumulation of physical traumas was taking its toll. “A little body can only take so much,” the veterinarian stated.
Legend, however, proved to be a fighter, akin to a boxer enduring a tough first night in the ring. He underwent surgery, received fluids, and was placed on a feeding tube. Slowly but steadily, his condition improved. Several days later, his wounds worsened, but his recovery remained on an upward trajectory. Rescue Dogs Rock NYC stepped in to assist with his increasing medical needs.
“We’re ecstatic with the progress and grateful that he’s still alive,” said Jackie O’Sullivan, co-founder of the organization. “It’s an incredible story, and he has made a tremendous impact.”
Despite his scars and missing ears, Legend’s hearing is unaffected, and his joy knows no bounds. His tail wags continuously, and nothing brings him greater happiness than showering Fran, his caregiver, with kisses.
Fran, overwhelmed by Legend’s affectionate nature, admits that she contemplates keeping him every day. Their bond has grown incredibly deep. However, she recognizes that she will be unable to continue fostering for Greenville County Animal Care, an organization in desperate need of more fosters.
She hopes that more compassionate individuals will step forward to offer their homes as fosters for Greenville County Animal Care. In the meantime, Fran, along with Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, is diligently searching for the perfect forever home for Legend, where he can receive the love and care he deserves.
