Sophia’s life took an unexpected turn two years ago when she became a mother at the age of 13. Despite never giving birth before, this kind senior dog welcomed a group of baby opossums into her heart and showered them with love. It all started when Sophia’s owner, James, discovered the four tiny opossums and brought them home.
According to James, the tiny animals were discovered beside their mother who had been struck by a car. He and his family took them in, and their Chihuahua Sophia quickly became attached to them, showing her care and protection.
Sophia appeared to perceive the young opossums’ requirement for a nurturing figure and assumed that position herself, ensuring they felt comfortable and secure. “We were taken aback by her actions since she was not a mother and was relatively young,” remarked James.
Sophia’s motherly instincts were evident when she was around the babies, but she didn’t restrict herself to just her own innate behaviors. Unlike opossum mothers who carry their young on their backs, dogs like Sophia are not accustomed to doing so. However, she readily adapted to the situation and carried her adopted babies on her back.
Sophia needed some time to adjust, but eventually she let the babies jump on her whenever they wanted. James explained that as the babies grew bigger, they couldn’t ride on her anymore, but Sophia made sure to keep a watchful eye on them at all times.
Thanks to Sophia’s nurturing and affection, the baby opossums flourished and developed over time. Eventually, they reached a point where they could fend for themselves, and James released them into the wild during late autumn. Now, two years later, Sophia remains healthy and robust, and it is hoped that the young opossums she assisted with are still thriving. Opossums are still present on his land today, which serves as a testament to the compassionate nature of James’ beloved pet.
